Stocks up on renewed trade deal optimism

Stocks are higher this morning and the Pound has jumped on increasing Brexit optimism. Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President, said that progress had been made between the EU and the UK regarding a post-Brexit trade deal.

Despite warnings that the NHS will come under pressure early in the New Year, the UK government will stick with plans to relax restrictions over Christmas.

In the US, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Joe Biden for the first time, thus acknowledging his victory in the US Presidential election. He also told reporters on Tuesday that “significant progress” was being made to agree a new fiscal stimulus bill.
