UK and European stocks are higher this morning on the first trading day of 2021. Investors are focused on how the new trade relationship between the UK and EU will fare and the worsening coronavirus situation. Boris Johnson said that further lockdown restrictions are likely even as the roll-out of the Astrazeneca vaccine begins in the UK today.
The NHS is coming under severe strain with the UK registering its largest daily increase in Covid-19 cases over the weekend. In Europe, Germany looks set to extend lockdown restrictions until the end of the month.
