The U.K. Stock market

  • The UK stock market was higher in a week of fresh Brexit turmoil.
  • Opposition parties agreed not to back Boris Johnson’s call for a snap election and a bill to stop a no-deal Brexit was approved which will now pass into law.
  • UK and European markets were lifted by an easing in U.S./China trade tensions and increased optimism that there could be a resolution to the unrest in Hong Kong.
  • Our Breadth indicator turned neutral (from negative) and our Momentum indicator, although still negative, ticked up.

The U.S. Stock market

  • The U.S. stock market was higher again this week, following August’s weakness.
  • Optimism increased regarding the U.S.-China trade dispute with reports that the two sides are planning to meet in October in Washington.
  • Positive economic data also helped with U.S. productivity rising more than expected in the second quarter although jobs data for August was weaker than expected.
  • Our Breadth indicator turned positive this week and our Momentum indicator ticked higher.
